Third Women's World Cup Of Golf Starts At Sun City , South Africa

South Africa Suffers A Disastrous Start With A Total Of 157

By Grant Winter
Saturday Star, Johannesburg, South Africa, January 20, 2007

Johannesburg, South Africa - Million Dollar Baby was getting rave reviews here yesterday (Friday, January 19, 2007). It was nothing to do with Clint Eastwood's blockbuster film about boxing though.

This was Julieta Granada from Paraguay and her co-star Celeste Troche taking a four-stroke lead on five-under-par 139 after day one of the Women's World Cup of Golf over the Gary Player Country Club course.

The diminutive, 20-year-old Granada shot to fame by winning the season-ending ADT Championship on the LPGA Tour last year to pick up $1-million - the richest prize in the history of women's golf. Ever since, she's been dubbed golf's Million Dollar Baby.

In yesterday's opening session of individual medal, the diminutive Granada shot a two-under-par 70, while Troche went one better with a superb 69 in spite of a double-bogey seven at the par-5 fifth hole (normally the 14th but the nines have been switched for this tournament).

Korea are lying second on 143 following a 71 from Ji Yai Shin, Player of the Year on her domestic tour last year, and a 72 from Kim Young. Scotland (Mhairi McKay and Janice Moodie) and Italy (Veronica Zorzi and Guilla Sergas) are joint third on 145, while South Africa had a disastrous day - Laurette Maritz shooting 77 and Ashleigh Simon 80 for a 157 total so they are already 18 shots off the lead. Hopes of a home victory, barring a miracle, have already been dashed.

McKay's 69 matched the three-under-par return by Troche as the best round of the day. The 31-year-old had a dream back nine of just 31 strokes and only 10 putts. She rolled in a 30-footer for birdie at No 10, chipped in for a four at the par-5 12th, holed from 15 feet for birdie at the 13th, and again from 30-feet at the 15th.

At the par-5 18th with its island green she hit her third shot over the water to just a foot from the cup and tapped in the putt for her fifth birdie of the nine and her sixth day.

The fine golf from Paraguay, although well-deserved, is surprising on two counts. Firstly, most feel the Gary Player course is playing too tough to produce such low scores. It's longer than any of the courses used on the Ladies European Tour last year, there is little if any run on the ball because of all the recent rain in the area, and the thick, matted kikuyu rough just off the fairways is brutally punishing.

Secondly, Paraguay has only six golf courses and very few golfers so it's not a nation one would expect to be leading the World Cup.

Yet these two young women not only have plenty of talent, but they're a lesson to anyone that team spirit and an enjoyment of the game count for plenty.

Second Abu Dhabi European Golf Tour - A Feast Of Golf

Organisers have offered sumptuous prizes and appearance fees to draw big names, writes Rob Taylor in Abu Dhabi

By Rob Taylor
The Weekender, Johannesburg, South Africa, January 20, 2007

Abhu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - The land of futuristic architecture, shopping festivals, money and oil is playing host to a European Tour event for only the second time.

It's all about attracting the name players - and maybe also golfers who don't care too much for the rigors of the US PGA Tour this early in the year.

It could partly explain why the organizers didn't have too much trouble lining up a conspicuous field that includes South Africa's Retief Goosen, ranked eighth in the world; Ireland's in-form Padraig Harrington; defending champion Chris DiMarco; Sweden's Henrik Stetson; Spain's Sergio Garcia; Scotland's Colin Montgomerie; and England's Paul Casey.

There's the odd $2m up for grabs, £333 330 for the winner, a free room for life in the swish seven-star Emirates Palace Hotel and also an expensive, mechanically sound Japanese sports car if any player successfully navigates a couple of holes in one.

Then there are the juicy appearance fees for players higher up the pecking order, and accommodation is on the house at the Palace for the entire 120-man field for the tournament's duration.

To make it even more convenient, the event is held during winter in the Emirates, with the day-time temperature battling to reach 22ºC, making for pretty cool conditions for players and spectators. In summer this opulent, refrigerated island state teeming with sophisticated ex-pats, soars to 50ºC and the authorities urge their citizens to stay indoors.

The 7 350-yard Abu Dhabi championship course has been transformed over the past year to satisfy demanding European Tour playing standards and has been bolstered with six new tees, about 40 extra trees and 20 new bunkers.

Some players reveled early on, like Thursday's overnight leader Philip Archer, who held a three-stroke lead after blazing his way to nine-under 63. But 18 holes later the Englishman's challenge had fizzled after a over-three par 75. Stetson, last year's runner-up, who was joint second after the opening day, could only manage level par and finished six under.

Philip Price, with just three wins on the European Tour since winning in Portugal in 1994, is the unlikely leader after 36 holes after a near-flawless seven-under-par round of 65. The Welshman is 10-under 134 for the tournament, but the spotlight is unlikely to fall on Harrington, the world's ninth-ranked player, who is only a shot behind.

Said Harrington, who bogeyed, the 18th: "If I think I'm going to go through a hole in my head this week or any week without hitting a bad golf shot, I'm only fooling myself." Better Harrington does more of his talking with his clubs.

So far Goosen, who had a month without any golf, has been unable to live up to his star billing. After a 66 on Thursday, the quiet South African limped home on a par 72, but is nevertheless only four shots adrift.

Meanwhile, DiMarco, who carded a 70 on Friday and is well-placed on five under 139, is proving that married couples don't necessarily have to be apart in a game that is famous for breaking up relationships, particularly at weekends.

The American has opted to use his wife, Amy, as caddy after the pair's success in Abu Dhabi last year. "I took her out of retirement," quipped the American, who explain that his wife used to carry the bags for him in the early 90s.

"She caddied for me in 92, 93 and also about 15 times in 94 on the US PGA tour. She's excited to be back."

Gary Player Country Club Golf Course Offers No Easy Holes For The Women's World Cup Of Golf Players

Ashleigh, Laurette ready to stun the world

By Grant Winter
The Star, Johannesburg, South Africa, January 19, 2007

Sun City, South Africa - Last year's Women's British Open was played at Royal Lytham and St Anne's, where the course measure just over 6 300 yards - the longest the players experienced on the 2006 Ladies European Tour.

By contrast, the third Women's World Cup of Golf beginning here today, Friday January 19, 2007, will be decided over a Gary Player Country Club layout that is measuring 6 466 yards.

"So it's especially long for the women," Germany's Anja Monke pointed out after yesterday's pro-am. "And you must remember that there's been so much rain here that you don't get any run on the ball. At Lytham it was bouncy and we had plenty of run. So this tournament should definitely favor the long hitters.

One player who falls into the category of big hitter - she puts most men to shame - is former world No 1 Laura Davis, MBE, CBE, who finished 2006 as No 1 on the highly competitive European Tour.

With 67 worldwide wins, including four Major titles, Davies is one of the all-time greats of women's golf. One thing missing from her CV, though, is victory by England in the new, unified World Cup of which this is the third edition following wins by Japan at Fancourt in 2005 and Sweden here last year.

"I think there are seven or eight teams that have a good chance this week and England's one of them," said Davies, who is passionate about football as well as golf and closely follows the fortunes of Liverpool FC.

Davies' partner this week is Trish Johnson, also an experienced campaigner with 18 worldwide wins and 101 top-100 finishes to her credit.

"There are no easy holes at Sun City, the rough is demanding and the greens are faster than we are used to."

For the third year running Laurette Maritz, who turned 43 six days ago, and 17 year-old Ashleigh Simon will be doing duty for South Africa after they finished 12th in 2005 and seventh here 12 months ago.

They tee off last (at 10.40am) in today's session of individual medal, alongside Sweden.

Finding The Right Country Club To Join by Robert Eaton

Being part of a country club is a great opportunity to make new acquaintances, meet old friends and exchange golf tips and tricks. The beauty of country clubs is that they offer a suitable social environment in which you can spend a lot of quality time. Here you will find golf pros and amateurs and you are very likely to find a golf partner or adversary that is at the same skill level as you are. Finding the right country club to join may be a bit difficult though, since some areas have a multitude of clubs to choose from. If you live in a small and remote area, you might be "forced" to join the closes country club, especially if it is the only one! Other areas, however, may have a few dozen country clubs in a single small radius, which makes your choice even more difficult. Here are a few things that you might want to consider before joining a country club:

Your golf buddies

Do you have friends that are members of a certain country club? This might be a good reason to check out that particular place and give it a shot, especially if you enjoy hanging out with your friends. On the other hand, knowing that a certain neighbor, coworker or acquaintance has joined a country club may be a deterrent.

Location

How far is the country club from your home? Although longer drives might also be pleasant, you might often miss out on some country club events because you do not have the necessary time to attend them.

Membership fees

Many country clubs require their members to pay certain fees for the services they provide. Make sure to choose a country club that has fees you find fair, so that you don't feel sorry after a while that you became a member.

Purpose

What is your goal? Do you want to relax and play some easy golf with friends? Or do you want to sharpen your golfing skills and play with better opponents that will help you improve your swings? These are the most important factors concerning which country club to join. But if all else fails, then pick one out of the phone book with a blindfold on and cross your fingers!

"I Recommend Mike's E-Book Unreservedly!"

Mike Pedersen has done two different things very well: he has 1), written with authority, knowledge, and unquestionable expertise on how to get and to stay in shape specifically for golfers, and 2), he has done it in a pleasurable, easy-to-read, and crystal clear manner...

The book is, first of all, very well organized--so you can start right from the beginning and take things at your own pace.

Mike covers areas in addition to those you would expect, i.e., psychological factors, aging, motivation, enjoyment ...it is right there up front with the applicability to every step of a golf swing--from setup to the end of the swing--and the end of the whole round, for that matter.

I recommend Mike's book unreservedly: it is the work of a true professional. All the more so given that its cost is the smallest fraction of the cost to obtain a personalized regimen, or compared to a few visits to a gym or health club.

Professional Golfers Are Overpaid? By Mike Wyman

There are millions and millions of dollars to be made on the golf course. Not counting endorsements, Tiger Woods has earned over $50 million during his short career and shows no sign of slowing down. He could stop now and never have to work another day in his life. These professional golfers are earning so much money that they regularly skip tournaments where the money isn't as big or if they are tired and need a break. Imagine if the every day regular guy or gal could decide not to go to work next week if they didn't feel like it. Life would be good.

The thing is, though, professional golfers do earn their money. They bring in massive numbers of fans to tournaments and also to everything else golf, like magazines and TV shows. They are the ones who are attracting the consumers to the companies that want to sell to them. Without the professionals, there would be no PGA tour, no Golf Channel, and no Golf Digest. There would still be great ideas to improve our golf games but how would the companies get the word out to the selected group of consumers who are golfers?

Some would argue that not only are professional golfer paid too much, but they enjoy a privileged lifestyle that most of us can only dream of. So what? Everyone knows how it all works and there are no surprises…only jealously. If we complain that much about how they are doing so much better than the rest of us, why not try to attain the same level they do? If it is that easy and that great, why doesn't everyone do it? Sure, some try and never make it but the majority of people who are the first to complain are the ones who have never considered they should go after the same lifestyle.

If it's that great, why not try to be the one reaping the rewards yourself? The truth is that is a long, long road to become a professional in just about anything. Professional golfers often struggle to get to where they are with no guarantee that they will ever be successful. Sure, Tiger Woods had shown promise from the time he was a young golfer but was he an injury away from a regular life like the rest of us? Probably he was. I wonder how many people out there, golfers or not, are just like the rest of us, having missed an opportunity due to an unfortunate sequence of events.

Remember, golf is a business just like any other. The professional golfers are what makes the business work and without them, countless businesses would not even exist.

Weight Training For Golfers is The Missing Link To A Great Game By Mike Pedersen

Weight training for golfers may sound exhausting to you and even an oxymoron, but I can tell you it's not a secret anymore. Weight training for golfers is a must if you want to achieve your highest level of golf performance.

You don't need to fear it! Embrace it and realize you will not only play your best golf…you will feel better than you have in years! I receive dozens of emails everyday from golfers who were skeptical, but gave it a shot and their results are amazing!

Worst case scenario for some of them is better health. The time you spend working on your golf swing technique is critical to your success. Some of these golfers embarked on one of my weight training for golfers programs and didn't put any time on the range.

The result for just a small percent of them was more energy, less aches and pains, and a dramatic drop in bodyweight. Needless to say they were still more than thrilled they did it.

But for the majority of these golfers I hear from have results that have evened amazed me. Increases of up to 50 yards on their drives! Slashing their handicaps by up to 8 strokes! And even winning their Club Championships!

These are very exciting emails to receive…and it's proof that weight training for golfers DOES work! I can say with every fiber in my body, that if you improve your body's ability to move from both a strength and flexibility standpoint, it is virtually impossible to not see improvement in your golf swing and game.

Don't you think if you could make just a little bigger backswing you would hit it further? Or, if your lower back muscles were a tad bit stronger, you wouldn't walk off the course with an aching back? I know you'll agree with me.

Weight training for golfers is not going into a gym and plopping down on a machine. This does nothing for your golf game! Golf is played "on your feet", and in a very dynamic position (golf posture), that requires a unique set of muscular strength, endurance and flexibility.

The right program is one that involves balance and coordination exercises, along with sequence of motion movements with resistance. This resistance can be as simple as exercise tubing, hand weights, or even weighted medicine balls.

Just take a look at the demands the golf swing puts on your body and you'll soon realize your weight training for golfers program needs to be dynamic. One that incorporates movements similar to your golf swing in both body positions and movement patterns.

Seek out a qualified golf trainer who has a proven track record with golfers. One of the most affordable ways is to search for golf fitness, golf training or even golf exercises.

Remember if you use google, which is maybe how you found this article, the first few colored results at the very top are "paid advertisements". The ones with the white background are the organic or real search results.

There are many choices out there. Just do your research and you'll be on your way to starting your weight training for golfers program.

How Your Drive Swing Can Have More Power By Mike Pedersen

A golf driver swing that is lacking in power has a couple of issues that need to be addressed. A golf driver swing is slightly different than your other clubs...but needs to have the same sequence of motion and body position at impact to produce more power and distance of the tee.

Most golfers swing outside their physical capabilities resulting in lost yardage and accuracy.

Has this ever happened to you?

You step up on a long par 4 or a par 5 and tell yourself you're going to get their in two. What did you do differently on the tee to achieve it? Did you swing harder? If so, what was your result?

The first issue to cover with your golf driver swing is your range of motion, especially on your backswing. Can you make a 90 degree shoulder turn with minimal tension? Most older golfers don't even come close.

The optimal position is a 90 degree shoulder turn, with approximately 45 degrees of hip turn. This requires a high level of core strength and flexibility. Shoulder flexibility comes into play just a bit also.

If you can't get to this position, it doesn't matter how hard you swing…you're still not going to maximize your power and distance with your driver. Trying to get to that position when you body cannot physically get there will only cause muscle tension, which slows clubhead speed.

Secondly, getting behind the ball and staying behind the ball at impact is critically to maximizing power and distance. This cannot be achieved with an "out-of-shape" body. It's a physically impossibility.

Even for a fit golfer, this is sometimes hard to accomplish on a consistent basis.

On the downswing, it is critical the first move is with the lower body rotating (not sliding). This rotation of the lower body, while the upper body stays back (for only a split second) takes a ton of core strength.

A weaker golfer would not be able to achieve this. He/she would come over the top early with the upper body, merely because they don't have core strength to initiate the downswing with the lower body.

So how do you achieve a golf driver swing with maximum power?

Start working on your core strength and flexibility from a rotational standpoint. Every exercise and stretch you do should incorporate rotational movements. The primary movement in the golf swing is rotational, so why wouldn't you focus on that in your golf training program?

This is the quickest way to longer drives!

Hitting more balls with the same body and the same swing won't get you there!

You've got to address the physical component to achieve the mechanical efficiency with your driver.

As soon as you do, you'll be blowing by the other players in your foursome!

This IS the approach you should take with your golf driver swing.

Fitness Componets For Golf By Mike Pedersen

The fitness components for golf are a select few, but they are critical to a golfers success. The golf swing is a physically demanding movement on the human body. It involves coordination, balance, stability, muscular strength and endurance, and dynamic sequence of motion just to name a few.

Do you think a body that is physically broken can accomplish a mechanically sound repeatable swing?

Based on the physical requirements of a mechanically good golf swing…NO way! It is a physical impossibility to have a repeatable swing for 18 holes unless…you've implemented the fitness components for golf within a consistent program.

When you isolate your golf swing muscles…stretch and strengthen them…and improve the efficiency of sequencing your motions throughout the swing…you will no doubt be a massively improved golfer for the long term.

Isn't that what you're really looking for?

I'm sure you don't expect to be a single digit golfer if you're currently a 20 handicap. But wouldn't it be nice to shoot in the low 80's once in a while? How about consistently? It's a reality if you take the fitness approach for golf.

For most of you in the U.S. it's winter time. There's no better time than RIGHT NOW to start implementing the fitness components for golf into your routine. You've got the extra time…and you DO want to play better next spring right?

Then get to it!

If I seem to be yelling…I AM! I really want you to listen to what I'm saying and apply it. Don't be overwhelmed…I'm here in the flesh to help you in any way I can.

It's my lifelong passion to educate golfers on the importance of the machine (body) in optimal golf performance.

Work on the "machine" and your game will skyrocket!

I played with a gentleman the other day that had every limitation in the book. And guess what? He could barely get the ball airborne. He was SO frustrated and embarrassed. I took him aside and gave him a little pep talk.

We only had a few holes left and I told him to RELAX and let his muscles do the work…with no thought at all.

I'm not kidding you…he parred the next hole (his first par of the day). Bogeyed the next (but he was still happy). And parred the very last hole! It was like night and day.

He had SO much tension in his swing…he had no chance to created any torque and power. I gave him my card after the round…an low and behold…he went home and bought ALL my golf fitness dvds AND my manual.

I personally called him and spent another 30 minutes on the phone with him.

He is now on his way to implementing the fitness components for golf into his "daily" life.

I tell you this story to give you hope!

Don't give up!

It's not too late!

Hang in there and work on your machine. Trust me on this. It's critical you pay attention to the fitness components for golf.

I personally called him and spent another 30 minutes on the phone with him.

He is now on his way to implementing the fitness components for golf into his "daily" life.

I tell you this story to give you hope!

Don't give up!

Golf Fitness Success by Kevin Valluzi

The 8 Keys to Golf Fitness Success

When Tiger Woods hit the professional golf scene, everyone took notice. Not only because of his great skill on the golf course, but because of what he did off the golf course to prepare his body to perform at the highest physical level ever seen in professional golf. When British Open Champ David Duvall was questioned as to why he began working with a personal trainer to transform himself physically to improve his golf game, his response was simply, "Because Tiger does it, and I need to keep up." As you've probably heard and read many times since, serious golfers everywhere are hitting the gyms to improve their golf game with better physical conditioning. In fact, if you're serious about your golf game and you're not doing any physical conditioning off the golf course, you are in the minority.

So where do you start if you've never exercised before? If you really want to be a successful golfer, you must follow these 8 principles which are The 8 Keys to Golf Fitness Success.

1. Increase your dynamic flexibility. While performing typical stretching exercises can improve static flexibility, the extreme range of motion performed during a full golf swing requires dynamic flexibility beyond the static range. That means you need a properly designed and individualized exercise program to increase dynamic flexibility where YOU need it.

2. Increase total body strength. The body will only function at a level as strong as its weakest link. If one area of your body is weak, then your performance on the golf course will be limited. For instance, weakness in the left hip will cause a right-handed golfer to slow down his swing earlier than desired which will reduce power. That means shorter drives.

3. Increase your core strength. Your core is the area of the body from the chest to the knees. This is the area where you generate all your stability, strength, and power used in the golf swing. A few stomach crunches just won't cut it. Doing exercises on one of those big Swiss balls won't do it either. You must train the core while standing on your feet. You don't play golf lying down do you?

4. Increase your power. Power is your ability to demonstrate your strength faster. That means swinging the club faster. A faster club head speed means longer drives. All the technique work in the world won't help if you don't teach your muscles to swing faster. Speed-strength and explosive exercises are a must in this case.

5. Hit fewer balls at the driving range. Most golfers just plain enjoy hitting golf balls so they buy bucket after bucket of balls hitting as many as 200 balls during one practice period. Hitting so many balls without proper rest between each swing accelerates fatigue and increases the likelihood of an inconsistent swing or a swing fault. You need to rest at least one full minute between full swings. Remember practice does not make perfect…practice makes permanent. If you swing poorly in practice, you'll swing poorly when you play.

6. Avoid excessive aerobic exercise. Here's where a lot of trainers just don't understand the science behind the physical preparation for playing the best golf. Performing aerobic exercise to increase endurance could be robbing you of your driving power because it's the wrong kind of endurance for golfers. Aerobic fitness is NOT a limiting factor in your golf performance.

7. Individualize your program. You won't make progress on someone else's exercise program. Tailor your golf-conditioning program to your needs and your performance on the course will improve.

8. Hire a qualified professional to create your personalized golf-conditioning program. An experienced fitness professional can identify your specific needs and design an effective golf-conditioning program which will save you the time and the frustration which goes with random, poorly designed, "cookie-cutter" exercise programs.

What should you expect from your golf-conditioning program?

1. You become more teachable. Oftentimes, a golf instructor must give you advice or a swing fault correction to compensate for a physical limitation such as a lack of flexibility or poor core strength. This is also a great way to get injured. By eliminating that limitation with a proper golf-conditioning program, you can now follow your instructor's advice directly without compensation and without the risk of getting hurt.

2. Your consistency will improve. Have you ever hit that perfect shot and then followed it with what may have been the worst shot you ever hit? Who hasn't? A proper golf-conditioning program will improve consistency by optimizing your flexibility, strength, and power to reproduce your ideal swing consistently.

3. Your drives will be longer. Increasing your strength and power increases your club head speed and stability. In other words, if you hit the ball harder, it goes a lot farther.

4. Your golf endurance will improve. Have you ever just "run out of gas" at the end of your round? A properly designed golf-conditioning program will allow you to play your 18th hole as strong as your first.

5. Your scores will improve.

Going To Golf School: How To Select A Golf School by James Wilson

With the many golf schools and academies available, it is more important than ever to do your homework in making the right choice.

First, select a desirable destination. Whether it is a high-profile location like Las Vegas or Orlando, or a place near home, it is important to be comfortable with the location.

Next, make sure there are playing lessons involved. It is important to get out on the course with your instructor to fine tune your progress.

Be sure to check out the teaching philosophy of the school you are considering. Do they teach the latest quick-fix or do they concentrate on proven fundamentals?

Many schools offer unproven strategies that may not last after you leave. Be sure you will get the type of instruction you want. Learn as much as you can about their instructors, such as age, years teaching and how long they have been with that particular school.

Finally, make sure the maximum student/teacher ratio 4 to 1.

Remember this is going to be your school, do your homework.

What to Expect at Your Golf School

You arrive with excitement. You're anxious to get started. You may be a little nervous. This is natural. Your instructor should immediately put you at ease and fully explain the schedule of activities.

It's also important that you, as the student, take the time to explain where you are and where you'd like to go with your game.

It's critical that you ask questions. You have an expert golfer at your disposal. Use him and remember that all questions are welcome no matter how basic.

As you begin your school, remember to pace yourself. Quality is always better than quantity. If there is more than one student in your school, be prepared to work some on your own as the instructor works with other students. Use this time to work specifically on what you have learned.

Try to ignore what the instructor is doing with other players during one-to-one time. They may be working on something that doesn't apply to you and it might distract from your learning experience.

Be ready to manage your expectations. You will improve immediately in some areas and other areas will take some post-school practice to perfect. Winston Churchill said, "To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often."

The practice range portion or your school is where you learn the fundamentals. The playing lesson portion is where you apply what you've learned in real time. This is where you use your good shots to build your confidence, and learn from your mistakes in a non-competitive, non-judgmental environment.

Above all else, golf school should be fun and enjoyable. Taken in the right spirit, golf school can be a great learning experience where you spend quality time with family or old friends, or you meet new friends.

Teaching Philosophy

In choosing a golf school you might be tempted by the offer of gimmicks or quick-fix promises. If so, ask yourself mentally if these techniques are so effective, why don't the pros use them? The answer is they don't. Professional tour players practice the fundamentals day in and day out. Rarely will you hear of a tour player that adopts an untested playing method just to be stylish.

Remember that the tried-and-true fundamentals of golf have not changed for 70 years. Legendary golf greats like Byron Nelson and Sam Snead used equipment that is technologically inferior to today's large drivers, composite shafts and hybrids. But they still won again and again. Why? Because they stuck to basics and ignored the fads.

Many recreational golfers never took the time to learn the fundamentals when they started out. As a result, they are stuck with bad habits that affect their entire game. A good golf instructor won't attempt to radically change your game. He will look for one or two areas to improve that will affect five or six other areas. This is the power of leverage and it's the key to getting the most from any golf school.

A truly good golf school will empower you to take what you've learned and apply it long after you leave. Remember, gimmicks and quick-fixes come and go, but fundamental improvement lasts a lifetime.

Follow-Up

Remember the last time you attended golf school? Were you able to transfer what you learned to real life when you got home? Did you have a clear picture of what you needed to work on? Did your instructor give you specific drills to practice and did you follow through?

Golf, like other areas of life, shouldn't be a spectator sport. If you want to improve, you have to work at it. Fortunately, working at improving your golf game can be fun and enjoyable once you know what to work on.

Most good golf schools use video and special teaching software to provide post-lesson analysis that enables you to take the lesson with you and use it as the basis for improvement.

Most good golf schools encourage you to keep in contact with your instructor to let him know how you're doing and to ask questions or get ideas.

As with any sport, learning is an ongoing process. It's important to take follow-up lessons at least once a year to build on what you learned in the prior session. For best results, you should take your lessons from the same person each time so that you'll get a consistent learning experience. A golf school can be more productive than taking golf lessons from your local pro because a good golf school provides a more comprehensive approach for six to seven hours a day versus an hour or half-hour at a time.

Golf school can be a very positive, rewarding, fun experience. Students come for a variety of reasons, but where else can you spend quality time with family, friends, or business associates? Golf is a game you can enjoy for a lifetime. A good golf school helps you get the most out your golfing experience.

How Good Are You In The Sand? By Ben Throckmorton

Think about it, if you could convert 5 out of 10 attempts from a normal lie in the trap, how many strokes could YOU save per round?

If you're like most people, you could save yourself at least 3-4 strokes per 18 holes.

I consider myself a decent player and having said that, I played recently at Pilot Knob Park in the foothills of the North Carolina Mountains. I found myself in green side bunkers 4 times during my round. Let's just say my iron play was a bit less than stellar. I got the ball up and in 4 times out of 4 and I'm going to explain to you right now exactly how I did it and how you can do it too.

It is my belief that every golfer, regardless of skill level, physical condition, gender, or age, is capable of playing good bunker shots and converting the up and in at least 50% of the time. The following tips will set you on a solid foundation that you can practice and achieve these results.

1. Practice your putting.

I know this is a sand play article but if you practice holing putts 10 feet and shorter for 30 minutes a week, sand saves as well as all other shots become a little less daunting. If you feel good about holing a 10 footer, it takes a lot heat off the rest of your game so just humor me and work on your putting 30 minutes weekly. My saving putts at Pilot Knob Park were 3 feet to 8 feet and I made all four.

2. Use a neutral grip.

You don't want to use a strong grip for bunker shots because it's absolutely essential that the club face slides under the ball and into your finish without the club face closing. A neutral grip is one that has the back of the left hand facing parallel to the target line and the right palm facing the same direction. Slap your hands together in front of you and you'll instantly see what I mean.

3. Aim the club face down the target line which should be just left of the hole.

You've heard all the hype about opening the club face and such and that's fine if you hit a lot of bunker shots but most folks don't so aim the club face down the target line which should be just left of the hole. The target should be just left of the hole because the method I use will impart some left to right spin which will move the ball from left to right once it gets on the ground.

4. Aim your feet on a 20-30 degree angle to the left of the target line.

The greater the angle you create between your feet and the target line, the higher and softer the ball will come out of the trap. Practice these shots a bit with varying angles and you'll see what I mean. Find the angle where you're most comfortable and which produces the best results and stick with it whatever it might be.

5. Anchor your feet in the sand to enhance your balance and stability.

6. Swing the club out to in across the target line parallel to the line that your feet are on and keep the face of the club square to the target line.

The club should enter the sand 1 - 2 inches behind the golf ball and "slice under it' into a nice full finish. This will produce a shot that comes out of the bunker and lands softly on the green. Your arms and forearms should remain relaxed throughout the swing. This will produce wrist action and speed through the ball which will produce a shot that spins and stops quickly under normal circumstances.

7. PRACTICE

It's very important for the average player to take as many variables out of play as possible. Thus the need for a neutral grip, and constant set up position. Practice and play with these points in mind and I guarantee you that your bunker play will improve
Enjoy Your Golf!
